MAKE A WISH! TANABATA JAPANESE STAR FESTIVAL
Celebrate the annual reunion of Japan’s iconic star-crossed lovers with storytelling and cultural activities!

Children’s Museum Houston would like to invite you to celebrate the Make a Wish! “Tanabata 七夕” Japanese Star Festival. As legend is told in Japanese culture, two star-crossed lovers, Vega and Altair, are separated by the Milky Way. They are allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. This reunion marks the celebration of Tanabata (meaning the evening of the seventh).
SPECIAL EVENTS:
Kendama Spotlight Performance: Catch a fascinating traditional Japanese skill toy interactive!
Event Times: At 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in Parent’s Resource Library.
Kamishibai: Enjoy an interactive Japanese storytelling experience.
Event Times: At 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in Parent’s Resource Library.
ON-GOING ACTIVITIES:
- Tanzaku: Manifest your wish by writing it on a colorful strip of paper to hang in Kids’ Hall.
- Origami: Make a symbolic origami magpie to hang on a tapestry in Kids’ Hall.
- Kirigami: Design then hang a Tanabata decoration from bamboo in Kids’ Hall.
- Interstellar Passport: Receive a star passport to collect event travel stamps in Kids’ Hall.
- Woven Constellation: Blast off into creating your own cluster of stars in Alexander Art Academy.
- Blast Off: Explore propulsion by building a straw rocket in Science Station.
- Rocket Firework: Make an eye-catching firework display with festive straw rockets in Junktion.
