"Sensory sensitive" refers to individuals who have heightened sensitivity to sensory stimuli, such as light, sound, touch, or smell. This sensitivity is common in people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or sensory processing differences. They may become overwhelmed or uncomfortable in environments with loud noises, bright lights, or strong smells.
At Children’s Museum Houston, we believe in creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for every child. As part of our commitment to supporting neurodiverse families, we’ve implemented thoughtful initiatives and resources to ensure a memorable and stress-free experience for visitors of all abilities. Here’s what we’re currently doing to champion neurodiversity:
We dedicate select days to fostering a sensory-friendly environment, where we adjust lighting, lower sound levels, and provide a calmer atmosphere. These days are designed to welcome families who may benefit from a more relaxed visit.
As a certified KultureCity venue, we’ve adopted best practices for sensory inclusion. Our staff has been trained to understand and accommodate sensory needs, ensuring every visitor feels respected and supported.
Visitors can check out KultureCity sensory bags at any time during their visit. Each bag is equipped with helpful tools such as fidget toys, noise-canceling headphones, and visual communication cards to assist children in navigating the Museum comfortably.
To help manage sensory sensitivity, we offer noise-canceling headphones that can be checked out at any point. These headphones are ideal for children who may find the Museum's energetic environment overwhelming.
Our Museum Social Story is a visual and descriptive guide that helps children preview their visit. This resource prepares kids for what they will see and experience, reducing anxiety and building excitement for their time at the Museum.
We’ve created a “Caregiver Tip Sheet” tailored to parents of neurodiverse children. It includes practical advice and planning tips to make the visit smoother, ensuring families feel empowered and confident before and during their trip.
Our Sensory Friendly Map, available online, highlights areas of the Museum that are quieter and more calming. Families can use this resource to plan their route and find spaces that meet their child’s comfort level. Through these initiatives, Children’s Museum Houston is proud to lead the way in creating a space where all families, regardless of neurodiversity, can play, explore, and learn together. We’re here to ensure that every visitor feels seen, valued, and celebrated!
