Each year, the Museum welcomes families to honor the legacy of civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with messages of unity, justice and peace. This year his message was especially important as communities rose together to speak against injustice.
As a place to gather in thought, play and learning, the Museum has recognized many leaders of the community who emulate Dr. King's actions with the Caryakid Award, the Museum's highest honor given to those who've made a visible and lasting impact for children and families in our community. The Honorable State Representative, Garnet Coleman has supported the Museum's annual MLK Day celebration and advocated for families' access to educational programs. The Museum is proud to present this year's Caryakid Award to him. Previous honorees, Rev. William "Bill" Lawson, Attorney Gene Locke, Paula Harris, Sonceria "Sonny" Jiles, and Sylvia Brooks, shared their congratulations during our first ever virtual MLK Day celebration.
The Museum will celebrate Black History Month beginning Monday, February 1 with storytimes featuring special guests including Melanie Lawson and Gina Gaston of ABC 13, Interim Superintendent Dr. Grenita Lathan, Defender CEO Sonny Jiles, and Museum Board Member Paula Harris.
