HOUSTON (Sept. 25, 2024) – Unwrap the excitement! A momentous celebration is on the horizon at Children’s Museum Houston! Tomorrow, Sept. 26, 2024, at 11 a.m., we will proudly dedicate our building to visionary philanthropist Kathrine G. McGovern in a grand ceremony that will culminate with the reveal of a giftwrapped “Kathy” the Caryakid statue—a tribute to McGovern’s legacy of generosity and support for educational innovation. The statue’s unveiling will be accompanied by a dazzling confetti cannon display which promises to light up the day with excitement!
The event also marks a celebration of the Museum’s most recent and prestigious accolade—receiving the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the highest honor given to museums across the nation. This recognition underscores the vital role Children’s Museum Houston plays in transforming communities through innovative child-centered learning that improves the trajectories of all children, a mission that McGovern’s philanthropy has helped to make possible.
Museum Board President Jonathan Sloan will present the official National Medal during the ceremony, honoring the Museum’s unwavering commitment to education and innovation—a vision that has been amplified through the incredible support of Kathrine G. McGovern. Her contributions have not only helped the Museum grow but have positioned it as a beacon of learning for generations of Houston’s children.
“This celebration reflects the essence of what KathrineG. The unveiling of ‘Kathy’ the Caryakid is our way of forever honoring her enduring support.”
Kathy the Caryakid statue, representing the strength and vision McGovern has instilled in the Museum, will be unveiled as a surprise gift—literally “unwrapped” before guests as confetti fills the air. This statue symbolizes McGovern’s pivotal role in helping Children's Museum Houston achieve the success that led to receiving the IMLS National Medal, making the day a dual celebration of her impact and the Museum’s continued excellence.
