Winter is a cozy season to curl up with a good book. And, if it has penguins or reindeer, that’s even better. In December, the Museum celebrated reading with its Animals in Winter event that featured a real reindeer, a holiday dog show, and story times with Museum educators dressed as giant penguins. To spread even more holiday cheer, children received free craft kits during story times for continued learning.
"Reading children's books can be a great way for families to celebrate the holidays," said CMH Educational Events Supervisor Stephanie Weisinger. "This event highlighted winter-themed stories, and it created excitement with related programming, including a flurry of white confetti snow."
Offerings like Animals in Winter are an integral part of the Museum’s efforts to encourage early childhood literacy, which sets children on a course for success. A recent study found that children who read for pleasure in early childhood are more likely to score higher on cognitive and mental health indicators in adolescence.
